Television undoubtedly hastened the fall of Justin Trudeau

Of all the politicians of our time, Justin Trudeau is one of those who has focused the most on image.

Since his famous boxing fight against Senator Patrick Brazeau (which can still be viewed on YouTube) in 2012, Justin Trudeau has very rarely given up an appearance on television, whatever the genre of show.

During the pandemic, like François Legault and other heads of state, Trudeau appeared on television almost daily. Such a sustained presence on the small screen seems to have served him well for a time, but more than one specialist now thinks that it contributed to a certain fatigue on his part.

Last fall, Justin Trudeau participated in Hot Ones Québec, a show by Marc-André Grondin where the guest must eat increasingly spicy chicken wings until he can’t take it anymore. It was an excellent move on the part of the producers, but was it appropriate for Trudeau to participate in this type of program, when he was in hot water within his party and in a very bad position in Parliament ? Hot Ones Québec could she help him improve the situation of his party, which was at its lowest in the polls?

The orange wave of 2011

It is common knowledge that Everyone is talking about it played a very favorable role in the orange wave of 2011 in Quebec. Jack Layton’s presence on this show surely subsequently encouraged a number of politicians to visit shows. Any one!

Their frequent appearances on television, their constant presence on social networks and their increasingly familiar attitude with citizens are probably more harmful than helpful. A prime minister is a human being like you and me, yes! but he carries a heavy responsibility on his shoulders. Such a charge must command respect and we cannot treat the person who carries it like an ordinary person or a simple next-door neighbor.

Too much familiarity?

Since their election in 2015, under the pretext of being close to the people, the Ottawa Liberals have imposed the “you” within the government and the senior public service. Everyone calls each other by their first name. Has this familiarity served the Trudeau government well?

The familiarity that politicians seek to establish, their almost daily presence on social networks and their eagerness to participate in variety or reality shows, which they should rather seek to avoid, contribute to forgetting that they have unique responsibilities which call for respect and command a certain distance.

I don’t know if anyone has noticed it, but most women in politics are more discreet and rarer than men. It’s an attitude that serves them well and could very well extend their careers.
