Since the end of regulated gas prices on June 30, 2023, a benchmark price has been published for consumers by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) every month. It increased again between December 2024 and January 2025. The increase is approximately 4.38%. The natural gas subscription price, however, has remained stable since July 2024.

Gas: a price increase of 5.41% for heating

As the French administration points out, the benchmark price represents an average estimate of the costs borne by suppliers for the supply of natural gas to a residential customer. It only has an indicative value and helps the consumer to find their way between the different offers now freely fixed.

For the month of January 2025, the average benchmark price amounts to 145.04 euros/MWh including tax, compared to 138.95 euros in December 2024. In detail, the average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for heating is 0 .11845 euros, compared to 0.11237 euros in December 2024 (an increase of approximately 5.41%). For cooking and hot water, the average price per kWh is 0.14743 euros, compared to 0.14135 euros in December 2024 (an increase of around 4.3%).

The price of the natural gas subscription remains stable at 114.30 euros including tax per year for cooking/hot water and 277.43 euros including tax per year for heating.

The average gas price multiplied by 7 between 2019 and 2022

This new increase of 4.38% comes after a long period that began in 2019 and during which the price of natural gas for households increased significantly. The average gas price on the markets increased sevenfold between 2019 and 2022, in particular due to the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 health crisis.

The price of gas finally stabilized at a very high level in the first half of 2024. In these conditions, it still remains essential to choose your supplier and its offer carefully to reduce the bill. The Energy Regulatory Commission also points out that suppliers have a duty to provide information and advice aimed at providing each customer with the offer best suited to their profile.
