HLM landlords under pressure. The new Minister for the City, Juliette Méadel, declared on Monday January 6 on Sud Radio that she wanted an inventory of social housing located in working-class neighborhoods to be carried out. “within three weeks”and can make it possible to financially sanction social landlords who do not properly ensure their maintenance.
Neighborhoods classified as priority urban policy (QPV) must be “supported more by the public authorities because they are in a situation of great poverty”also estimated Juliette Méadel. Social landlords benefit from an exemption from “315 million euros in property tax” to maintain social housing located in the QPVs, explained the minister, who wants to make this system a lever for sanctions.
In the event of a defect, “I will ask the prefects to come back to what we call this property tax exemption. (…) The elevators must work, the trash cans must be properly lifted, the mailboxes must be secure”estimated the former socialist, recalling the “difficult period on the budgetary level”. More than 5.4 million residents today live in around 1,600 QPV-classified neighborhoods.
