After resigning last month from the roles of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance (which Justin Trudeau wanted to take away from her), she got active during the holidays by calling several members of the Liberal caucus. This former Liberal Prime Minister of British Columbia (2011-2017) had been calling on Justin Trudeau to resign since last June and announced in October her intention to run for the leadership of the PLC. She said she was “impatient to join the tens of thousands of Canadians who will be called upon to choose our next leader” while Justin Trudeau was in the process of announcing his resignation.

The names of 4 ministers are also circulating:
- Anita Anand (Minister of Transport and Internal Trade)
- François-Philippe Champagne (Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry)
- Mélanie Joly (Minister of Foreign Affairs)
- Dominic LeBlanc (Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs)

The next person to take command of the PLC will have daunting challenges to overcome. With around 20% voting intentions in the most recent polls, the party risks being relegated to the rank of second opposition behind the Bloc Québécois, electoral projections show. This could cool candidates who aspire to become prime minister.
