The Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs provided details regarding allegations of “Senegal’s withdrawal from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category”.
In a press release, the ministry specifies that it is rather “the start of a process which could lead to the withdrawal of Senegal from this category after a transition of five (5) years, following the recommendation of the United Nations (UN) Committee for Development Policy.
Indeed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that the “withdrawal of a country from the LDC category follows a procedure within the competent bodies of the United Nations system”.
“As appears from resolution A/RES/79/230 of December 19, 2024, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, a period of five (5) years was retained to allow Senegal to prepare for its exit of this category. It is at the end of this transitional period that the withdrawal could be pronounced,” we read in the press release.
In order to avoid any disruption to its development program, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates the “Government is working on the development of a national strategy for smooth transition, backed by its new public policy framework entitled “Senegal 2050: Agenda national transformation”.
