After three years of intensive discussions, Morocco and Spain are finalizing the last details for the opening of customs in Ceuta and Melilla. This progress, which symbolizes the solidity of bilateral relations, marks a turning point in economic cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement provides, initially, the daily passage of a truck through customs postthus ensuring a limited but symbolic flow of goods in both directions.
A fruitful diplomatic warming
This development is the result of a strengthened understanding since Spain recognized, in 2022, Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara as the most credible and realistic option to resolve this long-standing territorial dispute. This position, welcomed by Rabat, opened the way to a new era of strategic cooperation.
In response, King Mohammed VI invited Pedro Sánchez to Rabat in April 2022, laying the foundations for an ambitious roadmap. This diplomatic momentum materialized in the High Level Meeting (HLM) in February 2023 in Rabat, chaired by Pedro Sánchez and Aziz Akhannouch, giving rise to a series of beneficial agreements covering various sectors.
A strong signal for Regional Cooperation
The imminent opening of customs in Ceuta and Melilla is part of this dynamic of rapprochement and demonstrates a mutual commitment to strengthening trade while consolidating the common fight against illegal migration.
This project marks a historic milestone in Spanish-Moroccan relations, reflecting a shared desire to overcome the challenges of the past to build a more integrated economic and political future.
