Three days already 2025 started. For many, the new year is an opportunity to take stock of the situation at home, particularly 12.9 million households benefiting from social benefits, according to INSEE statistics published in mid-October 2024.

Among these helping hands from the State: family allowances. On December 27, a decree published in Official Journal defined the resource ceilings taken into account for the payment of “allowances” in 2025. Here are the amounts to remember.

How is the amount of “allowances” calculated?

Family allowances are intended to support low-income families with at least two dependent children under the age of 20. This aid is paid each month by the Family Allowance Fund (Caf) or the Mutualité sociale agricole (MSA).

In addition to the constitution of the household, the calculation of the amount of aid is based on the categorical net income of the beneficiary.

Family allowances can be paid from the first child if you live in an overseas department. You are entitled to family allowances from the month following the birth or welcoming of a second child, a third child, etc.

This categorical net income corresponds to “all income (wages, land and movable income, agricultural profits, etc.) less charges (alimony, care costs for the elderly, etc.) and tax allowances (person aged over 65, disabled person, etc.)”, lists the public administration website.

All the ceilings and amounts of “allowances” to know in 2025

In 2025, it is the categorical net income of 2024 which is taken into account to define the amount of allowances to be paid in 2025.

Now that the rules are laid out, here are all annual resource ceilings to be respected to benefit from family allowances, as defined on the Caf website:

The ceiling of your resources must be:

  • Less than or equal to 74,966 euros (for bracket 1, i.e. people receiving full-rate benefits). In this case, the amount of “allowances” is 148,52 euros.
  • Less than or equal to 99,922 euros (band 2, for reduced allowances). You will touch here 74,26 euros.
  • Greater than 99,922 euros (band 3, for the minimum amount of allowances). Your family allowance will be 37,14 euros.

Families with no longer two, but three dependent children, logically see their resource ceiling increase. Thus, they must respect a basic level of resources:

  • Less than or equal to 81,212 euros (tranche 1), for an amount set at 338,80 euros.
  • Less than or equal to 106,168 euros (band 2), for a family allowance which will be 169,40 euros.
  • Greater than 106,168 euros (tranche 3). In this case, the beneficiary will receive 84,71 euros.
  • Four or more dependent children

Now let's move on to four dependent children. For the households concerned, the resource ceiling to be respected to receive aid from the Caf is:

  • Less than or equal to 87,458 euros (tranche 1);
  • Less than or equal to 112,414 euros (tranche 2);
  • Greater than 112,414 euros (tranche 3).

More than four dependent childrenthe maximum level of resources is increased by 6,246 euros per child per year. For example, for families affiliated to tranche 1, a limit of 93,904 euros per year.

Note also that for each additional child beyond three dependent childrenthe Caf or the MSA will pay 120.29 euros (tranche 1), 95.15 euros (tranche 2) or 47.58 euros (tranche 3). Any dependent child who has reached the age of 14 also entitles you to an increase.
