The year 2024 has ended with a very positive assessment of Moroccan diplomacy, recording exceptional performances. The kingdom’s foreign policy continues to shine with its clarity and unambiguous character. In fact, Morocco has managed to build a real global reputation in the long term, thanks to the seriousness of its fundamental work. That said, we must also not forget that Rabat has admirably learned to measure, wisely, its diplomatic steps. Then, its unique geographical positioning, its flexibility and its international openness give it a place of reference at the international level. In addition to this, the promotion of regional integration and its south-south cooperation reflect some of the remarkable qualities and political ambitions that make Morocco the great nation of today and tomorrow. As heads of state and government from around the world say, Morocco is Africa’s greatest regional power in the making, which any country dreams of having as its main strategic partner.
Credibility and influence: major assets
In the post-covid era, the cards between nations have been redistributed and the geopolitical reasoning of the past no longer holds water. To better understand the changes introduced in the sphere of global decision-making power, we can go back to the years 1990-2000 to say that at that time, a single great power (USA) governed. However, currently, it seems that things are seen in a completely different way. Even if American hegemony over the world remains current, a new multipolar world is emerging, where power is dispersed and international dynamics become more complex. To give a good description of the current system that governs the sphere of international relations, new rules are invented, putting much more emphasis on the positive and flexible partnership necessary between Africa and the rest of the world. Then, by evoking the African continent, we implicitly insinuate Morocco because it is the main point of contact for safe and permanent access to this space. It must also be clearly said: the country is extremely well positioned, displaying a diversity of colors and geostrategic riches: African, Mediterranean, North African and Atlantic. With a strong regional influence, exceptional political stability and international openness, it is also a country in which culture and values are well anchored within society.
In addition, Moroccan land is richly endowed with natural resources, to cite just a few examples: the world’s largest reserve of phosphate ores, used for the production of food fertilizers and in the manufacture of electric batteries; a soil abundant in rare metals (extremely sought after in high-tech industries). What’s more, the Shereef Kingdom is also a very stable and peaceful country, with clear rules and a high level of trust.
Is Algerian military power living its last moments?
Today, things have almost evolved and global decision-making power no longer tolerates the slightest misstep. In 2025 and in the years to come, things will no longer be a joke. Moreover, Mr. Tebboune and the men of Algerian power are bitterly experiencing a decisive turning point in history: a Russia which unexpectedly abandons the regime of Bashar Al-Assad, a Libyan situation which is evolving, positively , thanks to the genius of Moroccan diplomacy, a Mauritania which is getting closer and closer to Rabat; a Syria which inevitably seeks to renew its relations with Morocco.
Then, it doesn’t stop there: the unexpected return of Mr. Trump to the American Presidency which would definitively settle the Sahara issue; the recognition by France of the full sovereignty of Morocco over its southern provinces; the Chinese President’s stopover in Casablanca to meet face to face with Crown Prince Moulay El-Hassan; Moscow’s firm desire to strengthen its partnership with Rabat. Then, being unable to resolve the internal unrest in Algeria, the power in place was no longer able to control its land borders to the east with Libya, to the south with Niger and Mali and to the southwest with Mauritania: countries which are starting to complain annoyingly, even considering a break in their relations with Algiers. These same States condemn Algerian attempts at interference and hostilities – defeated – on their territories. There, things get tough in Algiers: is this the end of Algerian military power?
In any case, the latter has no other choice but to recognize, immediately, the Moroccan nature of the Sahara; otherwise, he would risk suffering the same fate as Al-Assad. In any case, let us hope that this year 2025 will be auspicious for the two brotherly peoples, Moroccan and Algerian. Let us remember that His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God help him, had never stopped extending his hand to Algeria which, each time, turned a deaf ear. Like it or not, the future of Algeria is strongly linked to Morocco.
