Finally, the year 2025 has arrived, bringing with it a new wave of exciting and highly anticipated films. The previous year had been rather satisfactory for cinema, with a series of predictable successes (such as the bland film Deadpool & Wolverine which was a hit, as everyone expected) and some unexpected surprises (special mention to Wicked). However, 2025 has some truly inspired works in store, promising 12 months of thrilling entertainment for movie lovers.
Remakes carried by authors such as Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro et The Running Man from Edgar Wright, to the final chapters of revered franchises like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningwithout forgetting the sequels to recent successes such as Wicked: For Goodthe list of films expected in 2025 is rich and varied. Missed from the selection, however, were works like The Bride! the Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jurassic World Rebirth by Gareth Edwards, and Paddington in Peru by Dougal Wilson, which says a lot about the quality of the films that made it onto the list.
10. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (TBD)
The series Knives Out will make its comeback with a third opus, Wake Up Dead Man. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Benoit Blanc, the hard-nosed detective having already solved the mysteries surrounding the death of Harlan Thromby (Christopher Plummer) and the guilt of Miles Bron (Edward Norton). He will be surrounded by an impressive cast including Oscar nominees Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, and Thomas Haden Church, as well as Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, and Cailee Spaeny.
As for Glass Onionlittle information has been released so far. However, we at least know that O’Connor and Brolin will play priests, while Kunis will play a policewoman. Netflix has not yet announced the return of Benoit Blanc, but it is likely that the platform will choose a strategic date, favorable for prices. Glass Onion was launched on November 24, so expect a similar release for Wake Up Dead Man.
9. The Running Man (7 novembre)
Few actors have had as spectacular a rise as Glen Powell. After stealing the show in the supporting role of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, Powell has become a real box office asset thanks to Anyone but You et Twisters. Her critically acclaimed performance in the film Hit Man by Richard Linklater even earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
In 2025, Powell will star in Edgar Wright’s daring remake, The Running Man. This new film is inspired by the eponymous novel by Stephen King, and follows a group of participants in a reality TV show where they are stalked by murderous hunters to earn money. Dystopian films are often risky bets, but with Powell and Wright at the helm, The Running Man could well inject a good dose of adrenaline during the end-of-year holidays.
8. Avatar: Fire and Ash (December 19)
As the saying goes: “Never bet against James Cameron.” » The director returns in 2025 with the third part of his series Avatarinstead Fire and Ash. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet will reprise their roles from the previous films, supplemented by a few new faces.
Although the plot remains a mystery, many indications point to the introduction of a new clan perhaps linked to fire. More details are expected to be revealed over the year leading up to the film’s scheduled release on December 19. Avatar: Fire and Ash will be Disney’s biggest draw for the holiday season, and given that the first two films in the series grossed more than $2 billion and hold the first and third places at the all-time box office, the forecast for this third film looks promising.
7. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (21 mai)
After almost 30 years and seven films, Tom Cruise finally seems ready to say goodbye to Ethan Hunt. At 62, the actor will reprise his role as an IMF agent in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningthe eighth opus of the saga and direct sequel to the film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning of 2023. Familiar faces, like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, will also return, as well as Hayley Atwell, who joined the franchise in Dead Reckoning.
Although the plot remains shrouded in secrecy, the seventh film left several narrative threads that will surely be addressed here. The Entity and its main agent, the assassin Gabriel (Esai Morales), will also be present, foreshadowing Ethan’s ultimate confrontation with his past. It is not certain that this is actually the last chapter of this saga, but one thing is certain: as long as Tom Cruise is there, other films Mission: Impossible will always be on the table.
6. Thunderbolts* (2 May)
After releasing just one film in 2024, Marvel Studios returns to the forefront in 2025 with three major releases. The second will be Thunderbolts*bringing together many of the MCU’s greatest anti-heroes, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Red Guardian (David Harbour), all under the questionable direction of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
Plot details remain unclear, with the exception of a shadowy female figure bringing together a group of anti-heroes with questionable backgrounds and morals to carry out dangerous missions for the U.S. government. If Thunderbolts* evokes a copy of Suicide Squad from DC, that’s because that’s pretty much the case. That said, with an impressive cast, the film will serve as the final chapter of Phase Five of the MCU, making it a must-see for both dedicated and more casual fans of this burgeoning cinematic universe.
5. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (25 juillet)
After Thunderbolts*the MCU will begin its Phase Six with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. After years of speculation and fan casting, Pedro Pascal, Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will play Marvel’s First Family. Like most of the films on this list, plot details also remain under wraps, but a few things have surfaced since the casting announcement.
We know that the film will not be an origin story and will take place in the 1960s in a retrolution version of Earth. Ralph Ineson will play Galactus, while Julia Garner will take on the role of his herald, Silver Surfer. Having the team face one of their most powerful foes early on is a bold choice. In the absence of another major antagonist like Doctor Doom, this is the most logical choice. The Fantastic Four: First Steps could well be the most anticipated film in the Marvel lineup for 2025, thanks to judicious casting and the promise of finally seeing a compelling version of Marvel’s First Family.
4. 28 Years Later (20 juin)
It’s difficult to find a more constant cinematic genre than horror. Every year brings an impressive offering of horror films, and 2025 is no exception. However, the most anticipated horror feature film of 2025 is probably 28 Years Laterthe much desired sequel to 28 Weeks Later released in 2007, itself a sequel to 28 Days Later in 2002. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle takes over the reins, while Alex Garland, also an Oscar nominee, returns to write the screenplay.
Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes will headline, with the return of the original protagonist, Jim, played by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy. The plot will follow a survivor from an isolated island community on a mission to a land ravaged by the rabies virus, uncovering dark secrets in the process. Thanks to its disturbing and striking trailer, 28 Years Later has quickly become the most popular horror film of 2025. The return of Boyle, Garland, and Murphy shows encouraging promise for this surprising horror trilogy.
3. Wicked: For Good (21 novembre)
No film has surprised as much as Wicked in 2024. Adapted from the famous Broadway musical, this film has generated more than $400 million on American soil, although its international numbers are a bit disappointing. Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in this prequel to The Wizard of Ozwhich chronicles the rise of the Wicked Witch of the West.
The resounding critical and commercial success of Wicked in the United States immediately propels its sequel among the hottest projects of 2025. Moreover, if Wicked is having a good price season, Wicked: For Good could reach a billion dollars by next November. The battle will be tough, given that the second musical act is much weaker. However, Wicked has already defied expectations, meaning its sequel will be able to rise even higher. At the moment, it is already one of the most anticipated films of next year.
2. Superman (July 11)
James Gunn will officially launch his DC universe on the big screen with Superman. David Corenswet will play the Man of Steel, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Other characters from the DC Universe will make appearances, but Gunn promised that the story will remain focused on Superman and Lois, getting “at the heart of the action.”
The official trailer for Superman broke records, becoming the most watched in history for both DC and Warner Bros., suggesting real enthusiasm for the film. After more than a decade of torment, this film seems to announce a new beginning for DC and a more faithful interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton. Superman will, however, face severe competition, because Jurassic World Rebirth et The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released the same month, but if the excitement is real, Man of Steel will rise high.
1. Frankenstein (TBD)
The most anticipated film of 2025 is none other than the remake of the gothic classic Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro. Oscar Isaac will play Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi will play the monster. Modern horror icon Mia Goth (MaXXXine) will also be in the cast, joined by two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, and Lars Mikkelsen.
Del Toro has already established himself as a modern author whose name is enough to spark conversation and interest. By adding a project such as Frankenstein and a choice cast to the mix, the excitement is at its peak. Netflix is distributing the film, and while no release date has been set, it’s likely the studio has plans Frankenstein as a boon for awards season. But he could also take advantage of the Halloween period to release the film in October. Only time will tell, but one thing is certain, Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro is the most promising project of 2025.
Ultimately, the cinematic universe is constantly enriched with new stories and exciting adaptations, inviting everyone to rediscover old stories in a new light. What do we think of the casting choices and narrative lines? Are they in line with fans’ expectations, or is this a bold risk on the part of the studios? The debates promise to be exciting as these releases approach!
