A first meeting. The heads of French and German diplomacy arrived on Friday January 3 in Damascus, Syria, for the first visit by foreign ministers from major Western powers to the country's new leader, the Quai d'Orsay reported.
Jean-Noël Barrot and his counterpart Annalena Baerbock must jointly meet the new Syrian leader Ahmad al-Chareh, at the head of a coalition led by radical Islamists who wrested power from Bashar al-Assad on December 8. “Twelve years after the closure of the French embassy in Syria, this visit will mark the desire of France and Germany to stand alongside the Syrian people, in all their diversity (…) to promote a peaceful and demanding transition”details the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The on-site exchanges will also allow ministers to work on responding to collective security challenges, first and foremost the fight against terrorism.”
