The Isolated Emergency Rescue team from the west of the Charlevoix-Est MRC will not have to wait long to carry out its first outing of the year. Last night, she went to the Chouette de la traversee de Charlevoix shelter to evacuate a 19-year-old young man.
The call came in around 12:57 a.m. At 3:15 a.m., the young man was handed over to paramedics. An almost routine intervention for the men of Chief Daniel Boies had it not been for the snow which caused trees to fall into the snowmobile trail preventing the rescuers from moving forward.
“Several trees had to be cut down with an axe. We requested assistance from La Malbaie with a chainsaw, but ultimately this was not necessary. The hardest part was surrendering,” said Daniel Boies, the director of this SUMI team.
The round trip by snowmobile for the rescuers was approximately 15 km.
The young man was not alone at the shelter when his health deteriorated. He had heart palpitations. He was taken by ambulance to La Malbaie hospital.
