Gift Orban will not have fared well at Olympique Lyonnais. The Nigerian is already heading to the Bundesliga.
Upon his arrival in the Jupiler Pro League, Gift Orban (22 years old) stunned everyone, piling up goals at a rate almost never seen in our championship. We thought he would only stay a few months, but the Nigerian ultimately stayed with the Buffalos for one more season.
A significantly less good season since after 20 goals in 22 matches, the Orban machine stalled and the striker finally left Ghent with a record of 32 goals in 52 matches. La Gantoise will finally receive 14 million euros in January 2024 for a transfer to Lyon.
Orban relaunches in the Bundesliga
At OL, Gift Orban confirmed that he seemed to be losing momentum since his arrival, he has only played 21 matches for 5 small goals. On the behavioral level, above all, the former Stabaek was not impeccable, which did not help him to win against tough competition up front (Lacazette, Mikautadze…).
This winter transfer window will therefore see him leave OL less than a year after his arrival. Fabrizio Romano announced he was leaving for Hoffenheim, who would pay around 12 million euros for the Nigerian striker. A loss-making operation for Lyon, but not by much, and which will bring money into the coffers of a club closely monitored by the DNCG for its budget in the red.
Gift Orban was followed by several clubs; Will Still’s Racing Lens had notably offered 8 million euros which did not convince Olympique Lyonnais.
