Pyrenees: two women die from a fall a few hours apart
Double tragedy in the Pyrenees sector in Haute-Garonne, in Occitanie on Wednesday January 1st. Two women died from a fall from Cagire peak a few hours apart.
It is in a very steep sector of the Pyrenees and popular with hikers that the double drama was played on Wednesday January 1st. Early in the morning, a first group of three people set off on a ridge path. At 8:30 a.m., between the Cagire and Escalette peaks, a 34-year-old woman fell 300 meters. The gendarmerie helicopter found his lifeless body shortly after. “The slightest misstep is fatal, there is no second chance unfortunately”underlines Sébastien Abadie, head of the mountain section – CRS Pyrénées.
At 2 p.m., a couple takes the same route. A 46-year-old woman also slips and dies. The prosecutor confirms that she was not equipped with crampons. Equipment that is nevertheless essential these days, with the weather making the snow very hard. Crampons that attach easily to hiking shoes. Back from hiking, three friends left well equipped, with crampons in their bag. But they encountered many reckless people on their way: “We saw people in a bit of difficulty, even after the accidents.” Since Wednesday, a municipal decree has prohibited access to several dangerous areas until the end of March.
