François Bayrou will fly on the evening of Sunday September 29 for Mayotte, more than 15 days after the passage of Cyclone Chido. It is awaited by the residents who, for many, have lost everything. Anger is growing despite the first humanitarian aid convoys.

For several days, Sylviane Amavie has been identifying the needs and demands of her neighbors to bring them back to the government. With other activists, she sent a letter to François Bayrou to ask for help. “Tomorrow, we are expecting something concrete. It is up to the State to assume its responsibilities”she declares. She feels a deep feeling of abandonment. “We have been here for 10, 15 years, fighting for life to change. (…) Chido has only revealed to the world what was hidden”she adds.

Two weeks after the disaster, the Mahorais are trying to regain a semblance of normal life. In an emergency accommodation center, tired volunteers manage the humanitarian aid themselves. One of them, Alice Pernelle, comes every day. She denounces “a complete abandonment” et “a dehumanization” disaster victims. Expected Monday, December 30 in Mayotte, François Bayrou will face the discontent of the residents. Insecurity, access to water and education will be the major challenges of this displacement.
