We did not hear Mehdi N’s explanations a month ago before the criminal court of Walloon Brabant. Summoned to explain himself on a charge of intentional assault and battery resulting in incapacity for work, the man did not make the trip to Nivelles. Not sure he made the right choice…

Drug trafficking in Waterloo and Braine-l’Alleud: two young dealers and repeat offenders, one from Braine and one from Etterbeek, sentenced

The public prosecutor was waiting for him at the hearing. The facts date back to August 12, 2023, when major highway work was underway near Waterloo. While driving his car, the defendant clearly did not comply with the signs put in place as part of this work and at one point, he found himself stuck in the area where the men were working.

A worker approached the vehicle. From what he saw, the driver and his passenger were not in their normal state. The worker suggested that they had consumed laughing gas.

Mehdi N.’s reaction, however, is not one to laugh at, or even to smile at. Furious at not being able to move forward, he got out of his vehicle and hit the worker. And it was no small slap in the face, since the man was unable to work for three days following these blows.

A complaint was filed and investigators used images recorded by ANPR cameras – those which scan car plates – to trace the potential perpetrator. This is how Mehdi N. was identified, then summoned to the police station. But he didn’t answer.

The police did, however, have a photo of him, which was shown to the victim. She recognized her attacker without any doubt. New summonses were sent to the suspect, but he did not respond to them any more than the first time.

In front of the court, the representative of the public prosecutor was waiting for him firmly. In vain, but she pointed out that the defendant had already been convicted for traffic offences on… twenty-four occasions. Not enough to inspire leniency on the part of the prosecution, as you might expect!

In the judgment it has just rendered by default, the court follows the requisitions: Mehdi N. is sentenced to fourteen months of imprisonment, as well as a fine of 800 euros.
