A smile of satisfaction, without outpouring of joy. As two years ago, Olivier Falorni largely dominated this first round (45.64%) against Jean-Marc Soubeste (29.64%), this time candidate for the Union of the Left. With a sharp increase in participation (69.48% against 51% in the second round in 2022), the outgoing MP (Together) even collected twice as many votes (34,824 against 15,976), achieving a “full success” in the first constituency La Rochelle-île de Ré.

“I am leading in all 20 communes,” he stressed on Sunday evening at La Rochelle town hall, while the final results were not yet known.

In the same wedding hall, Emma Chauveau – who did not wish to speak to “Sud Ouest” – also showed a happy face. Fourth in the first round in 2022, the National Rally candidate gains a place, increases her score (22.65% against 9.54% in 2022, with 17,278 votes against 5,253) and qualifies for the second round. A first in La Rochelle-Ré. It even comes in second position in the municipalities of the agglomeration of La Rochelle and the Île de Ré, but also in the La Rochelle districts, in Mireuil, Laleu-la Pallice, Villeneuve-les-Salines.

“A little disappointment” for Soubeste

“Here,” notes Olivier Falorni, “we have resisted because we believe that there is a republican, humanist, secular gathering that must exist in our country.”

For Jean-Marc Soubeste and the entire New Popular Front camp, “it’s a bit of a disappointment.” “Particularly compared to the RN’s score,” added the ecologist elected official from La Rochelle. “We can also see that the right-wing bloc worked. Falorni, Macron’s candidate, gathered more than 45% of voters. He still managed to fool part of the electorate, with his big gap between various leftists here and Macron’s support in the National Assembly. For our part, we’re seeing a big increase in working-class neighborhoods. It’s the result of a big mobilization.”

Jean-Marc Soubeste and 150 activists gathered in the evening on the Concurrence beach in La Rochelle to continue the campaign until July 7.
