Category 3 Hurricane Beryl moves toward southern Lesser Antilles

Hurricane Beryl is now a category 3 hurricane according to the NHC. It continues to progress towards the south of the Lesser Antilles. In Martinique, the weather is expected to deteriorate significantly by the end of the day on Sunday.

Reconnaissance of the NHC (National Hurricane Center) teams is underway.

Beryl could reach category 4 on Monday (winds at 210 km/h), before passing over the Grenadines. Its center is expected to pass during the day on Monday between Grenada for the southernmost island and Saint Lucia for the northernmost island.

The passage of the phenomenon off the coast of Martinique should, however, generate a clear deterioration in weather conditions, the intensity of which will be conditioned by the distance of passage of the center of Beryl.

In Guadeloupe too, the weather could deteriorate, even if, for the moment, the archipelago, on Green alert, remains away from the worst consequences.

The city of Fort-de-France is preparing

Yesterday afternoon in any case, a first crisis meeting took place at Fort-de-France town hall. The services are preparing for the arrival of this cyclonic phenomenon, as explained Maurice Ferné, the general director of services of the city of Fort-de-France.

The services will put in place restrictions and monitoring of areas of the territory which are prone to flooding. We must also think about mobilizing services, since we may have, under the influence of wind or precipitation, to cut down trees that are across the roadway, to secure homes, particularly for the elderly. .

The city’s municipal police, present yesterday afternoon at this crisis meeting, will obviously be mobilized for the passage of Hurricane Beryl. For things to run smoothly, the teams have a municipal backup plan which “provides for all procedures in the event of cyclones, earthquakes, industrial disasters”, maintains Lydia Féliot, head of the city’s municipal police department.

The teams are already mobilized and know what they need to do. It’s just a reminder of the instructions

Regarding the demonstrations planned for today in Fort-de-France. For the time being, they are maintained but brought forward. In particular “Lapote D’Zarts”, according to Miguel René-Corailin charge of promoting the carnival in Fort-de-France.

We plan to start earlier, so around 2:00 p.m., at least the parade. But the event itself starts at 10:00 a.m. with artisans who will be there to welcome us.
