Have those anxious about the vote found refuge in movie theaters? In any case, that is what more than 1.4 million moviegoers chose on Sunday, June 30, on the occasion of the first day of the Fête du Cinéma.

A record figure for this 39th edition which celebrates its best start in 20 years and thus silences the concerns related to the context of the legislative elections. “Despite the political news, the public went to the cinema in large numbers (…) reaffirming that cinema in theaters is the favorite cultural leisure activity of the French” rejoiced the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF) in charge of the event.

The Fête du Cinéma allows spectators to benefit from the single rate of 5 euros per screening, for four days. In France, according to the National Center of Cinema (CNC), the average price of a seat is 7.20 euros.

Best attendance day since 2019

From the first day, this edition saw a 53% increase in attendance compared to last year. It also marks the best day of attendance in theaters, all days combined, for 5 years, according to the FNCF.

A momentum that also benefits other films released earlier. A surprise success for French cinema, Artus’ comedy, A little something extra thus benefited from this breakthrough in attendance by exceeding 8 million admissions this weekend.

For his part, Vice-Versa 2the latest from Pixar Studios, continues its progress with more than 2 million admissions. A second opus rich in emotions of the adventures of Riley which achieves the best start for an animated film in France.

Since its creation in 1985, the Fête du Cinéma has already reached a total of 3.5 million admissions in 2013, then in 2021. The 2024 edition has until Wednesday July 3 inclusive to beat this record.
