Eddie Murphy has revealed he refused cocaine from comedians John Belushi and Robin Williams.

The 63-year-old actor was at the height of his fame in the 1980s, when both actors were struggling with the addiction, and says he is grateful he did not succumb to the same temptations.

Eddie told The Interview podcast: “I remember being 19 and I went to the Blues Bar. It was me, Belushi and Robin Williams. They started doing coke and I was like, ‘No, this is good for me.’ I wasn’t taking a moral stand. I just wasn’t interested. Not having the desire or the curiosity, I would say that was providence. God was watching over me at that point.”

John was killed by a heroin overdose at the age of 33 in 1982, while Robin took his own life in 2014, aged 63, after years of drug and alcohol addiction.

Eddie told the New York Times about the dangers of fame: “When you become famous at a young age, especially as a black artist, it’s like you’re living in a minefield. At any moment, something could happen that could undo everything. It’s like all these things are happening and I’m totally oblivious.”
