Ultra trail. Before repeating his title at the UTMB, Jim Walmsley triumphs on ”his” Western States

Jim Walmsley power 4! The American won this weekend for the fourth time on the Western States, the first major of the ultra trail season. After 2018, 2019 and 2021, this is a fourth success for the man who won his first UTMB last year. Still three fewer than Scott Jurek, seven times winner of the event between 1999 and 2005.

Katie Schide with stratospheric weather

Walmsley won in 14h13’45”, the second best time in the history of the event behind the one he himself achieved in 2019 (14h09’28”). The Californian Rod Farvard arrived 10 minutes and 30 seconds after him (14h24’15), followed very closely by his compatriot Hayden Hawks (14h24’31). The Englishman Jonathan Albon took 5th place, the Frenchman Simon Gosselin finished 22nd in 17h04’13.

While Courtney Dauwalter was not at the start, her compatriot Katie Schide took advantage of the opportunity to win the Western States for the first time. 13th overall, she also set the 2nd fastest time in history in 15h46’57” (the record: Dauwalter in 15h29 last year).

Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide are both due to be in Chamonix in August for the start of the UTMB. The former to defend his title, the latter to win it back after 2022.
