Usinage St-Laurent and Aciers Richelieu have created a 48-ton part

By: Jean-Philippe Morin

Employees of the Sorel-based companies Usinage St-Laurent and Aciers Richelieu have worked hard over the past two months to create a massive 48-ton part used to recycle cardboard in Mexico.

The Andritz company, located in the Lachine borough of Montreal, called on Sorel expertise for its drum pulper manufacturing project. This type of pulper will recycle 75,000 tons of wood fiber annually, or 200 tons of paper per day.

The giant machine can process local mixed office paper waste (known as “MOW”, short for mixed office waste) and multi-layer liquid containers (Tetra Pak) which contain polyethylene and aluminium films that make these items extremely difficult to recycle. Andritz technology will separate these materials while recovering almost 100% of the fibre from the cardboard/paper (less than 2.5% fibre loss).

Usinage St-Laurent and Aciers Richelieu had only two months to manufacture this part. The plants operated seven days a week, 24 hours a day during this entire period.

Andritz entrusted the specialized transport of the drum to Transport Bellemare so that the journey of more than 5,000 km could be carried out efficiently and safely to reach Essity, a company located in Sahagún, Mexico.

“This new sector of the environmental industry can generate more and more jobs in the region thanks to the expertise of Usinage St-Laurent and Aciers Richelieu,” insists the president of the two companies, Éric Durand, who thanks Andritz for the trust placed in him and his employees for their hard work over the past two months.
