They are much less well known than the Hospices de Beaune, but the Hospices de Beaujeu in Beaujolais still cover no less than 75 ha of vines, most of which are planted in crus.

These Hospices want to relaunch on November 30th an auction that had until now gone somewhat under the radar. At the helm is the Burgundy Maison François Martenot (Meursault) which has taken matters in hand.

The idea is to make it a real event with the
participation of renowned chefs and sommeliers, but also tastings for the general public and ultimately, an auction of vintage bottles which will serve a charitable purpose: in this case the creation of a therapeutic and sensory garden for patients and residents .

Around fifty lots

Among the lots which will make up the flagship pieces of the Sale, around fifty will have been selected from the best wines of the estate and decorated with limited edition labels, created by the young contemporary artist Pierre Boggio.

Owned by the Beaujeu Hospital, the Hospices wine estate has a very long history behind it.

It was built up slowly over the centuries, thanks to the bequests of more than 250 benefactors, from… the year 1240 until today.

In the 2000s, the Hospices de Beaujeu decided to secure the distribution of the estate’s wines by entering into an exclusive partnership with a merchant, responsible for marketing the estate’s wines in France and internationally: the Burgundy Maison François Martenot; and this, with the aim of giving new visibility to the wines of this historic, relatively little-known estate.

A visibility that the auction on November 30th aims to further accentuate.

Six appellations

Most of the Domaine des Hospices de Beaujeu is made up of the heart of Cru Régnié.

The Hospices de Beaujeu represent a total of 75 hectares of vines spread over the communes of Régnié-Durette, Cercié, Villié-Morgon, Lantignié, Juliénas; and this, on the following appellations: Régnié, Brouilly, Juliénas, Morgon, Bourgogne Gamay and Crémant de Bourgogne.

Half of the vines grown in Gamay and Chardonnay are over 45 years old.

This auction is also an opportunity to reconnect with the Beaujolais vineyard which, after a serious crisis that it has managed to overcome, has once again become very fashionable, particularly in its cru version, of which there are ten.

The objective of this auction should make it possible to accentuate the movement and restore a little more luster to the appellation…
