Transforming streets and squares into an open-air gallery, encouraging residents to rediscover their urban environment from a different perspective, is the aim of the artistic operation. Art & Heart of the Citywhich takes place in Pontoise (Val-d’Oise).

“It’s a first to be able to discover the work of contemporary artists in public space,” explains Cécile Van Praet, director of cultural affairs.

“Beyond occupying public space, the artists will reinterpret, in their own way, the heritage of Pontoise”


The aim is also to initiate the Action Cœur de Ville program, a state mechanism which should enable the launch of several operations to improve the city center.

Playful works

Playful and interactive works are installed in the old heart and encourage passers-by to engage in artistic exploration and stroll through the picturesque streets of the city.

They will occupy the top of rue Thiers, the places du Petit and du Grand-Martroy and des Moineaux and the rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville.

Artist Nicolas Soulabail, also known as Inkoj, creates frescoes on the city’s sidewalks and transforms the streets with graphic surprises to reveal the hidden architectural treasures of the city’s heritage.

Intimate reflection

With his Cube, Quentin Carnaille, offers a floral bloom, which allows a glimpse of the interior surfaces and reflects the grandeur of Saint-Maclou Cathedral.

Koralie Carmen Flores and her Blue Cabin, on Place du Grand-Martroy, offers a place of rest and intimate reflection, encouraging the people of Pontoise to share their wishes for the city.

A ballot box will be placed there so that residents can submit their wishes and expectations regarding urban development.

“The launch of a first participatory budget completes this approach to citizen involvement,” underlines the town hall agent.

Occupying urban space, but also empty commercial cells, to transform the heart of the city into a highly visible artistic showcase.

Art & Cœur de Ville will above all have the value of testing urban development solutions “and knowing what their uses will be.
