Early legislative elections in Seine-Saint-Denis: the stakes of the vote

As a result of the dissolution of the National Assembly announced by Emmanuel Macron after the European elections on the evening of June 9, early legislative elections will take place throughout the country this Sunday, June 30 and July 7. In Seine-Saint-Denis, some 818,000 voters are called to the polls during this two-round majority vote, for which polling institutes predict higher participation than two years ago. Polling stations open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. 99 candidates are competing in the department’s twelve constituencies.

The 12 left-wing deputies elected in the department in 2022 are therefore putting their seats back into play. At the time, all of them won by running under the banner of Nupes, the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union. All of them have returned to the campaign, most under the colours of the New Popular Front (NFP), the name of the coalition bringing together France Insoumise, the Socialist Party, the Communist Party and the Greens.

Can the left repeat the 2022 grand slam?

In the 5th and 7th constituencies, the outgoing Raquel Garrido (LFI) and Alexis Corbière (LFI) claim to be part of this alliance but were not invested by their party, which preferred Aly Diouara (La Seine-Saint-Denis in heart) and Sabrina Ali Benali (LFI). La France insoumise also supports Mohamed Awad (LFI) in the 4th constituency, although reserved for the outgoing Soumya Bourouaha (PCF) on behalf of the NFP. A dissidence that the formation of Jean-Luc Mélenchon justifies by the support given by the communist mayors of Bobigny and Montreuil to the two banned deputies.

Will these divisions prevent the left from repeating the “grand slam”? Will they benefit the Republicans or the UDI, two parties that hope to win back their lost seat in 2022, if not more? Will the good scores of the National Rally list in the European elections in Seine-Saint-Denis allow Marine Le Pen’s party to reach the second round in one or more constituencies, as was the case in 2002 and 2012? First answers this evening.
