At a time when the Meurthe-et-Moselle Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis 54) is struggling, like all its counterparts, to recruit volunteer firefighters, the intervention leaves a bitter taste. A feeling exacerbated by the fact that not so long ago, in the middle of the Covid crisis, caregivers were applauded every evening at the windows.
Strangulation attempts and slaps
On the night of November 21 to 22, around 2 a.m., firefighters from the Val de l'Orne rescue center were engaged in rescuing people on rue Jeanne-d'Arc in Homécourt. The alert was raised by the family of a 28-year-old man. The latter no longer answers calls from his loved ones.
In accordance with the procedure, the staff of the Jovicourtoise barracks find a way to enter the accommodation. The firefighters found themselves in the presence of an unconscious victim.
A Smur team, made up of a doctor, a nurse and a caregiver, is called in for reinforcement. The almost thirty-year-old regains consciousness and suddenly goes into a rage. He tried to strangle the Smur caregiver (3 days ITT), slapped a firefighter three times (2 days ITT) and spit in the face of another.
Shocked staff
Police officers from the Val de Briey police station were in turn called to the scene. The violent patient is immediately arrested and placed in police custody. Referred to the Briey public prosecutor's office this Friday, November 22, he was to be tried according to the appearance procedure upon prior admission of guilt.
Beyond the complaints filed by the attacked staff, the anger and dismay do not subside. Dominique Peljak, general director of CHR Metz Thionville, and Julien Andre, head of the territorial group within Sdis 54, strongly condemn the acts to which the staff involved were victims.
“It is unacceptable for caregivers to be attacked while providing personal assistance,” adds Dominique Peljak. The three members of the Smur were deeply shocked. They subsequently benefited from psychological support and we ensure their functional protection. »
