Lalla Latifa, mother of the King of Morocco and widow of Hassan II, has died

Morocco is in mourning. Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of King Mohammed VI and widow of the late monarch Hassan II, died on Saturday.

“The spokesperson of the Royal Palace announces, with immense sadness and deep affliction, the death of HRH (Her Royal Highness) Princess Lalla Latifa, Saturday,” according to a statement from the Palace relayed by the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).

Condolences from Algeria

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sent a message of condolences to “the king of Morocco, brother country, Mohammed VI, following the death of his mother”, indicated the Algerian presidency. “I was saddened to hear the news of your mother’s death. Following this sad news which has left you and the royal family in mourning, I would like to present, in my name and in the name of the Algerian people, to your majesty, my sincere condolences,” wrote Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Algiers broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat in August 2021, denouncing a series of “hostile acts” by its neighbor, particularly concerning Western Sahara and normalization with Israel.

A life between Morocco and France

Princess Lalla Latifa had no official responsibilities and was not known to participate in public events. According to foreign media, she married Hassan II’s former security chief after his death in 1999, and lived between Morocco and France. The information has never been officially confirmed.

Mohammed VI has reigned over Morocco since July 1999, when he succeeded his father.
