About a hundred people were evacuated on Friday, June 28, from the Cronenbourg shantytown in Strasbourg. They were rehoused and are now receiving support from the Caritas association.

Located along the M35, the Strasbourg ring road, the Cronenbourg slum was evacuated this Friday, June 28. Around twenty people were taken care of and relocated to a reception site located on rue du Rampart, behind the city train station.

Several families are now sleeping in shelters, far from the makeshift housing they have occupied since 2019.

“It’s better here, we have light, water, showers… We have everything here. Before, it was hard, but now it’s better for us, we’re happy, we have the whole family here,” confides Codin, originally from Romania.

For the education of children and professional integration

Rehoused people have at their disposal toilets, a laundry room and a kitchen. These developments were made possible by members of the Caritas association, which fights against poverty and exclusion, who will ensure the maintenance and security of the site.

“We will have a team of four social workers, a department head and a coordinator who will provide all this support,” indicates Nadine Vedder, deputy director of the Caritas association.

An important part of the mission of these social workers will consist of supporting these families, both adults and children.

“It is a space that is intended to welcome them initially and to work with them,” says Sonia Maouni, head of the “integration” service at Caritas. She mentions “professional integration” and especially “schooling and monitoring of children, which is very important for them.”

These new residents will benefit from this monitoring for two years to be able, for example, to find work and settle into permanent housing.
