A man dies electrocuted on the metro rails in Belleville

A man was electrocuted on Sunday morning on the metro tracks at the Belleville station in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, on the border between the 11th, 19th and 20th arrondissements. Emergency services could only confirm his death. An investigation has been opened.

It was around 7:20 a.m. when a metro user alerted the emergency services. The latter explained to the police that he had seen the victim descend onto the tracks of line 11, before the latter was electrocuted by touching the traction rail that powers the trains.

The victim could not immediately be identified. She would be around forty years old, according to initial information. It is not known whether it was a suicide or an accident. The investigations were entrusted to the 10th arrondissement police station. Traffic was able to resume normally at 9 a.m.

The Paris metro operates using an electrified rail system. Two steel rails serve to guide and support the train, while a third rail, called the traction rail, provides the electricity needed to move the trains. This rail is under a voltage of 750 volts direct current, which allows the train motors to operate.
