A violent storm is currently crossing Auxerre and its surroundings, this Saturday June 29, 2024 afternoon. The stormy disturbance announced by Météo France arrived with its share of rain and wind, between 5 and 6 p.m., coming from Nièvre on the one hand and going up via Puisaye-Forterre on the other hand.
An arcus-like phenomenon
At 6 pm, an arcus formed over Auxerre. Located immediately in front of the precipitation line, this type of low cloud in the shape of a roll or an elongated arc on a horizontal plane, sometimes appears during a storm. According to Météo France, which had placed the department on orange alert for storms, the stormy weather should then spread rapidly towards Franche-Comté and the Grand-Est from 7-8 p.m.
This remarkable stormy episode is accompanied by locally violent phenomena with wind gusts sometimes exceeding 100 km/h, up to 120 km/h possible very occasionally; significant accumulations of precipitation in a very short time (locally 40 to 50 mm in less than an hour and up to 80 mm in a few hours); a risk of large hail with locally hailstones with a diameter greater than 5 cm and intense electrical activity.Photo drone Marc Charasson
The stormy area will then gradually evacuate through the north-east of Lorraine and Alsace after midnight. Behind, less virulent storms may still occur until this Sunday morning at 4 a.m. For the rest, stormy rains remain in the news until mid-Sunday morning.
