Switzerland favourite against Italy, really?

Published on June 29, 2024 at 05:45.

Switzerland is in the round of 16. This is her lowest level, now, since 2014, but also her glass ceiling, which she has only broken once, no need to remind you against whom or in what circumstances. The one in Berlin, this Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Olympiastadion, is the sixth in a row and it conveys something unprecedented, a surprising, almost disturbing feeling: Switzerland has confidence.

Their opponent is called Italy, the reigning European champion, twice crowned, four times world champion. The great Squadra azzurra, which the Nati has not beaten in a knockout match since the 1954 World Cup, and in an official match since 1993, Marc Hottiger’s goal in Bern, there again no need to describe the details, you remember everything. Yes, it is indeed this Italy that we are talking about, and it too fears this Switzerland that made it miss the 2022 World Cup.
