the essential
This Saturday, at the Breithaupt bookstore, Ludovic Marino and Louis Michaud are signing their biography on Jean Cau, secretary to Jean-Paul Sartre and native of the Aude department.

This is a long-term work that Ludovic Marino and Louis Michaud have carried out. Since 2021, they have embarked on writing a biography on Jean Cau, writer, journalist but also secretary of Jean-Paul Sartre. The one who was born in Aude, in Bram, has also been awarded the prestigious Goncourt prize. So, for Louis Michaud, we must retrace his life. Why not a biography? But information on the Audois is scarce. “There were several difficulties. Firstly, we cannot easily find his books. The other problem is that the vast majority of people close to Jean Cau are deceased”. Finally, it was the meeting with Jean Cau’s nephew that was the trigger. “We also consulted the Gallimard archives. It was a valuable asset for writing our biography”he adds, recalling that their book has a preface by the political journalist Franz-Olivier Giesbert. “When we write a biography, we don’t want to make an error in the history of the person we are writing about”he explains.

A passion in his writings

Several things marked Louis Michaud. Starting with Jean Cau’s passion for bullfighting. But also his writing style. “There is a passion in his writings. They are exciting. There is also his political life, moving from the left to the right and the time when he was Sartre’s secretary”he concludes.

Today, from 10 a.m., he will dedicate this book in Carcassonne to the bookseller Breithaupt.
