July will be wet, but that moisture will manifest itself differently throughout the month.

This year again, July promises to be generous in terms of precipitation in Quebec. Experts predict a much wetter month than normal, due to widespread rain first and thunderstorms later.

The atmospheric conditions are also reminiscent of those of July 2023: the waters of the Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico are once again abnormally warm, providing a large quantity of humidity to the surrounding atmosphere. The other common point is the presence of a trough of cool air near Hudson Bay, favoring the formation and intensification of depressions.

However, a notable change is expected: the cool air trough should disappear around the second week of the month to give way to a heat dome.

Widespread rain to start

During the first third of July, low pressure systems will be relatively well organized, bringing precipitation to a large part of Quebec. These rains will be less intense than those observed last weekend, but should still be significant during the passage of disturbances.

Then the storms return

From July 10, the systems should be less present and more disorganized. But atmospheric instability combined with heat and humidity will favor another type of phenomenon: thunderstorms.

These storms, often localized, could cause sometimes heavy and sudden rains, mainly at the end of the day. The regions most at risk include western, central and southern Quebec, which are particularly exposed to heat.
