Due to concerns raised by the population, the City of Contrecœur is asking the Bureau des audiences publiques en environnement (BAPE) to conduct a complete review of Triumvirate’s residual hazardous materials recovery project. The council is also relying on a recommendation from its sustainable development and climate change advisory committee.

Among the concerns, the City notes the risks of fumes and smoke in the air and the risks of fire. She wants to know examples of deployment of this technology elsewhere in the world.

Several other questions must be answered, such as those surrounding the storage of treated materials, the passage and cleaning of vehicles, proximity to the residential sector and the conservation sector of a sensitive natural environment, opportunities for technological and commercial development as well as the disposal of the final treated residues.

“We consider it important that the Contrecœuroises get all the answers to their questions. While recognizing the autonomy of the BAPE within the framework of this project, the City of Contrecœur asks the organization to complete the process. Any project must be done with respect for the environment in our territory”mentioned Mayor Maud Allaire.

Citizens, organizations and institutions have until June 28 to request a full review of the project from the BAPE, which the City has done.
