Freuler’s goal during Switzerland-Italy goes viral

Freuler and Switzerland eliminated the defending champions in the last 16 of the Euro.Keystone

Freuler’s goal on Saturday in Switzerland’s 2-0 win over Italy has gone down in Euro history. We explain why.

The Swiss team brilliantly qualified for the quarter-finals of the Euro by extinguishing a very weak Italian team on Saturday in Berlin. They won 2-0 thanks to goals from Remo Freuler in the first half (37th) and Ruben Vargas just after the break (46th). But if Vargas’ strike into the top corner delighted aesthetes, it was above all the first goal that was commented on on social networks.

What really created the buzz was the action that led to the opening goal, that is, the build-up phase.

Remo Freuler’s goal followed a 31-pass sequence.

This is a record for a Euro match since Opta (a famous statistics provider) began analysing the European tournament, namely since 1980.

This first success (Remo Freuler’s 9th in 71 selections with Switzerland) was a trigger. It gave a lot of confidence to the Nati against a very weak Italian selection, whose first shot on target only came in the 72nd minute of play.

In the end, Freuler and his teammates fully deserved their victory, the first against Italy since… 31 years and the 1-0 in Bern on May 1, 1993. This success allows the Nati to continue its journey in the tournament. She will face the winner of the match between England and Slovakia in Düsseldorf next Saturday.which will be played this Sunday (6 p.m.) in Gelsenkirchen.

Their next opponent, whoever they may be, has already been warned: Switzerland is formidable in the construction of the game.
