Too light a sentence? Monday November 18, 2024, the Paris criminal court sentenced a man 600 euros fine for having threatened to kill the principal of Maurice Ravel high school. The latter must also compensate the victim and complete a citizenship course. After this decision, the prosecution decided to appeal. A second trial should therefore be held at a later date.
Heavier sentences in other cases
“On November 19, the chamber of immediate appearances sentenced to one year of imprisonment and a citizenship course and awareness against online harassment, a man prosecuted for the same offense of public provocation to commit a crime, for having posted a tweet inviting the murder of a teacher from Montreuil”, in Seine-Saint-Denis, recalls the public prosecutor , indicating to appeal the decision.
The Minister of National Education Anne Genetet herself estimated on Tuesday that the sentence to a simple fine was “a blow to National Education”.
“We have to burn this dog alive”
The Ravel high school affair dates back to February 28. The principal had an altercation with an adult student who he asked to remove their veil within the premises of the establishment. The next day, several death threats were published online, including that of AA, the 27-year-old young man tried in Paris, who wrote on his X account: “This is crazy. You have to burn him alive, this dog.” The complaint for violence filed by the student involved in the altercation was dismissed for “insufficiently characterized offense”.
Trials elsewhere in France
During the hearing, the assassinations of Samuel Paty in 2020 and Dominique Bernard in 2023 were mentioned numerous times, as was the difficulty of enforcing secularism in educational establishments. In mid-March, another man arrested as part of this investigation was relaxed in Lisieux (Calvados), but the prosecution appealed. In November, the public prosecutor requested a ten-month suspended prison sentence for a third man tried in Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain). The decision will be made on November 28.
