A gust of 130 km/h recorded on Saturday evening in Tonnerre-Joudre: a twenty-year record at the station

The bad weather that occurred on the evening of Saturday June 29, 2024 in Yonne was of rare intensity, even if it only caused material damage. In Tonnerre, a historic wind-related record was recorded.

The Tonnerre-Joudre meteorological station recorded historic data on the evening of Saturday June 29, 2024. While an intense stormy disturbance crossed the Yonne department, the station recorded a gust of 130 km/h, at 18 h 36 precisely.

“Stormy Gust”

A wind power never reached since the creation of the station in 2004. “The previous record dated July 27, 2013, during another summer storm, with a value of 118 km/h”, comments Frédéric Decker, forecaster at Météonews.

This is the strongest gust recorded on Saturday evening. Strangely, the following values are well below that observed in Tonnerre: 74 km/h in Saint-André-en-Terre-Plaine, 66 km/h in Auxerre… “From 100 km/h, we speak of a stormy gust. 130 km/h is a remarkable value, for a storm gust, it is quite atypical”, analyzes Météonews.

Reaction of watercourses, heavy rains, return of clear spells: the latest on storms in Yonne

The east of the department was heavily affected by the rainfall. The figures relating to the accumulation of water are also significant: 47 mm in Noyers, 46 mm in Tonnerre, 42 mm in Saint-André-en-Terre-Plaine, 37 mm in Saint-Léger-Vauban. “Knowing that the worst of it fell in the space of two hours, between 6 and 8 p.m.,” emphasizes Frédéric Decker.

Damage, but no injuries

Saturday evening, the disturbance which crossed the department caused some damage on the roads where many branches and trees fell. Some roads were flooded and homes were deprived of electricity, mainly in Avallonnais and Tonnerrois.
