A few months after the start of the career of the new 5 Series, here is finally the new M5, considered for ages as the Boss of large, high-performance sedans. And of course, this new vintage is the first of the electric era. If it is not yet completely “battery-powered”, it nevertheless adopts a plug-in hybrid system, which provides considerable support to the thermal engine: the 4.4 liter V8, phew!

An evolution of the 600 hp engine of the previous M5, it is deflated here to 585 hp. But thanks to the 197 hp electric motor, the new BMW M5 claims a whopping 727 hp, as well as a total torque of 1,000 Nm! All of this is obviously distributed to all four wheels. Enough to explode the times even more? Well no…

New BMW M5, 727 hp, but above all 2,445 kilos… - BMW

Slower

Because there is a small problem in this story, which we have already noticed “in the house opposite”, with the current Mercedes-AMG C63. Between mechanical components and batteries, the hybrid system represents serious ballast attached to the car, which now announces a mass of… 2,445 kilos.

That’s almost 500 kilos more than the outgoing generation. As a result, the new M5 is a bit draggy (we’re exaggerating, of course), with a 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, or 2 tenths more than the old M5. And besides the numbers, it will be especially in sporty driving, on a winding route, that these 2.5 tonnes will be cruelly felt. All that for an electric range of 40 km? Yes, but especially for emissions approved at 37-39gCO2/km. We live in wonderful times…
