We are in shock, totally stunned with sadness, completely groggy with grief, as we write these lines to announce to you, with tears in our eyes, the death of Landry Nguemo at the age of only 38. The terrible news has just been announced by Cameroonian media: the former midfielder trained at ASNL died tragically, this Thursday, in a road accident between Yaoundé and Bafoussam. This brings back a very bad memory, with the disappearance of the former ASNL goalkeeper Philippe Schuth in the same dramatic circumstances, on February 20, 2002, on the A31 near Custines.

42 selections for the Indomitable Lions

Landry Nguemo had been in Cameroon, his native country, for a few months for a large real estate project that was particularly close to his heart. He was about to return to France, precisely to Nancy, where he continued to live with his wife and two children whom he loved so much. He was still working at ASNL in January 2023, as an educator at the Forêt de Haye training center. He had even joined the staff of Albert Cartier’s pros, just before the latter’s dismissal.

Landry Nguemo was a real child of ASNL, arriving as a teenager, launched in Ligue 1 in 2005 by coach Pablo Correa. He will leave Nancy supporters with the memory of a talented midfielder full of energy, who entered the history of the Thistle club forever by being part of the generation that won the 2006 League Cup. He also played the European Cup with Nancy, before being loaned to Celtic Glasgow and leaving Lorraine for the Girondins de Bordeaux, in 2011. A magnificent club career which also has him; led to Saint-Etienne, Turkey and Norway to finish. Landry Nguemo also shone with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, with 42 caps in total, two participations in the World Cup (2010, 2014) and an African vice-champion title in 2008.

His former teammates destroyed

Beyond his footballing qualities, Landry Nguemo was a smiling, intelligent, cultured boy, appreciated by all. “Landry was kindness in its purest form,” summarizes former Cameroonian ASNL goalkeeper Guy-Roland Ndy Assembé who was his teammate in the national team, “I just spoke about it with Benjamin Moukandjo on the phone , we are devastated.” ASNL sports director Michaël Chrétien, too: “We experienced so much together at the training center, as players. I can’t find the words to say how horrible and unjust his passing is.” It’s just as complicated for us to find the words to finish this article. We can only offer our most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
