Michel Russin site of Sens hospital

The new Michel Russin site at the Sens Hospital Center was inaugurated this Tuesday, June 25. Paul-Antoine de Carville paid tribute to the practitioner whose name he bears but also to André Chaussat, deprived of the inauguration of the Gaston Ramon hospital 40 years ago and guest of honor for the occasion.

The new Michel Russin site offers 12,150 m² of additional premises which the services have gradually invested in until April. Amounting 43 million euros including 6 million dedicated to equipment, financed by the State and the ARS, the work began in 2019 and was partially completed in December 2023 then in full in February 2024. The site Michel Russin owes his name to an anesthesiologist-resuscitator who worked from 1983 to 2013 at the Sens hospital center and died in 2021. A name proposed by the former collaborators of Doctor Russin who describe him as a man “brilliant, caring and discreet”. A name that this Woman-Mother-Child Center bears particularly well because “through his commitment, Michel Russin’s entire ethic was to help the children of the world”.

The Michel Russin site was designed in a modern architectural style, imagined by Groupe-6 architects, with a specific volume play and a pastel shade specific to each of the three programs hosted by the complex: the Woman-Mother-Child Center (Pediatrics , Neonatology, Maternity and Gynecology), Hemodialysis and the Oncology Day Hospital. The architectural firm believes that the “project is defined by its simple, readable and accessible geometry, highlighted by the fresh colors of its colorful patios”. While the Gaston Ramon hospital is a so-called “semi-industrialized” building, of the Duquesne type, imposed by the State in 1976. A total of 10 hospitals were built on this model, notably the Villefranche hospital in Lyon. Other hospital models were recommended at the same time, including Beaune (1966) and Fontenoy (1974), standardized buildings built faster and for less money.

André Chaussat, former mayor of Sens

The inauguration of the Gaston Ramon hospital by André Chaussat 40 years later…

He had to wait 40 years to be able to inaugurate the Gaston Ramon hospital. Deprived of a ceremony in 1981 at the opening of the establishment, the former mayor of Sens André Chaussat was honored last Tuesday at the inauguration of the Michel Russin site. “The political leaders of Yonne, mainly on the right, had strongly suggested to André Chaussat not to offer a platform to the new Minister of Health of a socialist government, a minister who was also a communist” explains Mayor Paul-Antoine de Carville. It was also in good taste to pay homage to him during his lifetime. The elected official therefore wanted “repair this omission of our local history” by offering the possibility to his predecessor “to inaugurate this hospital with dignity”.

André Chaussat teaches us that “It was in 1960 that the decision was taken to build a new hospital in Sens. In the years that followed, several projects were studied on different terrains and for different capacities”. On February 12, 1979, André Chaussat became president of the Board of Directors of CH de Sens. “The building was barely coming out of the ground. And it was under my presidency that the work continued until its commissioning.” The hospital services took place in this new building on June 16, 1981. February 12, 1983 Gaston Ramon was named in the presence of his son Doctor Jean Ramon and Professor Mercier, member of the Academy of Medicine. “Curiously, that day, many invited personalities were unable to be present, held back by previous obligations. I will quote the director of Ministry Hospitals, the sub-prefect and the deputy”. After this little official settling of scores, André Chaussat did not fail to welcome the choice of the name of the new center because he really appreciated Michel Russin.
