The Rex cinema in Saint-Pierre bows out

Yves Ethève, director of MauRéfilms, predicted last year the closure of the last local cinema in the South. Thus, this Thursday, the emblematic cinema of Saint-Pierre announced that it is bowing out and closing its doors for good. For the inhabitants of Saint-Pierre, the REX quickly became an essential cultural place in the city.

Although it opened its doors in 1932, renovations had been carried out to refresh the place and improve the comfort of spectators. While cinema tickets were becoming more and more expensive, management had lowered prices to make cinema accessible to everyone.

> The multiplex killed it

In the statement, the cinema management said that following the opening of the southern multiplex last year, it was unable to overcome the effects of competition.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the permanent closure of Cinema REX, an emblematic neighborhood theater that served the community of Saint-Pierre for more than 90 years. Despite considerable efforts to adapt to a growing competitive environment, the REX was unable to overcome the challenges posed by the opening of a neighboring multiplex.”
