A firefighter died following a collision with a car on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), during the night from Monday to Tuesday, indicate Nice-Matin and BFM Nice Côte d’Azur.

Shortly before 1 a.m., the firefighter, who was riding a two-wheeler while off duty, was hit by a car which was traveling at high speed and had just crossed a red light. The victim was then thrown around sixty meters.

The man, aged 41 and a professional firefighter belonging to a barracks in the center of Nice, could not be revived despite the intervention of the emergency services. 23 firefighters and 8 engines from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the site.

Tests in progress

On board the vehicle that hit the firefighter were four people aged 16 to 26, three of whom fled before being arrested. A last one presented herself to the police.

All were taken into police custody and will have to submit to alcohol and drug tests. An investigation has been opened.

“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the tragic death of a professional firefighter in a terrible traffic accident on the Promenade des Anglais last night,” reacted the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, on X, adding to send his “thoughts” and his “support” to the victim’s family, his loved ones and his colleagues.
