Senegal digitizes more than 19 million civil status documents: a decisive turning point

Senegal has taken a major step in the modernization of its civil status system with the digitization and indexing of more than 19 million records. This ambitious project is part of the ‘Nekkal’ program, initiated on May 7, 2021 and financially supported by the European Union to the tune of 18 billion CFA francs for a period of 42 months.

The Minister of Urban Planning, Territorial Communities and Regional Planning, Moussa Bala Fofana, explains that the program aims to improve the civil registration system and regularly produce vital statistics thanks to the digitization of registers. During the fifth meeting of the national steering committee for this program, he stressed that more than 19 million documents are now accessible from the National Civil Status Register, which centralizes all the data of Senegalese local authorities.

This digital register facilitates interaction between structures using civil status data and makes it possible to verify the authenticity of documents while ensuring their reliability and security. Moussa Bala Fofana also announced the upcoming establishment of a platform offering services to all citizens, allowing them to request civil status documents without traveling, whether in Senegal or abroad.

To guarantee better working conditions and safety for agents, 26 model civil status centers are being finalized, others being rehabilitated and equipped with computer equipment to simplify registration and search for documents. The minister recalls that the modernization of civil status constitutes a priority for the government in terms of digitalization and modern administration.

In conclusion, this initiative aims to ensure that each Senegalese citizen identifies and exercises their civil, political and social rights, while allowing the State to plan and guide public policies more effectively.
