Rural Coordination renounces demonstrations in Poitiers

Sunday June 23, 2024, the prefect of Vienne banned the demonstration which was planned for Monday June 24, 2024, at 7 p.m., in front of the prefecture, by Rural Coordination 86 (CR). Jean-Marie Girier considered that there was “risk of serious disturbance to public order”.

The next day, the CR of Vienne indicated in a press release that it was renouncing this banned demonstration. Excerpts. “ Rural Coordination 86 takes note of the ban on demonstrations ordered by the prefect and cancels the mobilization for this Monday, June 24 at the prefecture. This new affront from the senior official is not a surprise, since he has consistently refused communication with the farmers of our department for almost a year now. »

And the agricultural union points out the supposed prefectural choice of its interlocutors. ? “Mr. Girier continues his meetings and other more or less formal interviews with selected representation from the agricultural community. Representatives obviously not very vocal on angry subjects. »

“The prefect openly despises the majority representation” of Vienne farmers

The anger of CR 86 does not subside however. On the contrary. “Faced with the growing unrest in our ranks and the inaction of the State and its departmental representation, we chose to make an impression by proposing to enter the court of the prefecture. Someone has to take the first step […] Until today, he despised farmers. Mr. Prefect has just taken a new step; he also openly despises their intermediate body, their democratically chosen majority representation. It is a shame that this demonstration, which had organizers, and therefore those responsible on a civil and criminal level, was repressed! […] It is now the responsibility of the prefect to protect farmers who will act without banner and will have to manage all the inconveniences […] If he doesn’t feel up to the task of controlling the situation and if he’s afraid of some farmers, it’s time to think about a career change. »

“We remain mobilized”

There will therefore be no CR 86 gathering this Monday, June 24. Its president, François Turpeau, confirmed this to us. “We take note of this decree. Unlike the anti-basins, we do not maintain demonstrations which are prohibited. However, we remain mobilized and we will think about actions in the coming days. »
