On the stage of the Moulin du Roc, the dancers are getting into place. “Come a little closer to see?” » asks Samantha Mourougayen, headphones on, microphone in one hand to direct her troop. The dance teacher from the RG danse studio makes the final adjustments before the two performances on Saturday.

The studio was born 10 years ago, in Niort, from the wishes of this urban dance teacher. “There are girls to whom I have been teaching for 10 years, who are part of the company. It makes me sound old when I say that! » smiles the founder of the school. This year is the first in which she devotes herself entirely to her school.

“I had a baby, I had to slow down”

“Before, I worked in human resources part-time in a food company. But I had a baby, I had to slow down. » Especially since this corresponds to the school’s transition from associative status to corporate status.

Street jazz, ragga dancehall, commercial hip-hop, and, new this year, heels (dance on heels): classes were given in Niort, in the avenue de Paris studio, as well as in La Rochelle. “Next year, it will only be in Niort. There is a lot of demand here”, indicates the founder of the studio. Adults, in particular, have flocked since the Covid pandemic.

The spirit remains the performance on stage, even if it is always possible not to perform at the end of the classes: because there is a show for the end of the calendar year, and one for the end of the year school. “I don’t really like the term “gala”, I prefer that of spectacle. There are a lot of collegiate choreographies with around a hundred dancers, it’s always a bit impressive. »

If the 10 years mark the professionalization of the studio, Samantha Mourougayen has some ideas for the years that follow. Like recruiting a few more boys. “Maybe they don’t come because the majority of participants are girls. But dancing is perfectly suited for boys…” Maybe also try to meet the growing demand. “I’ll see as we go…” smiles the teacher, before going back on stage to supervise her students.

The “iconic” 10th anniversary show

> For these 10 years, the students of the RG dance school are preparing two shows, Saturday June 22. There are still places left for the 4:30 p.m. performance. The theme of the year, “Iconic,” already meets the 10e school anniversary. “We will nod to icons and hits,” smiles Samantha Mourougayen. On the program: around 200 dancers on the stage of the Moulin du Roc, for innovative choreographies.
