“It’s a lovely adventure”: Gigi, a turtle who was found adrift, was released after two months of care off the coast of Antibes

A loggerhead turtle was found adrift by boaters last April. After two months in the wildlife rehabilitation center at Cap d’Antibes, it was released into the sea.

Gigi, a loggerhead turtle, returned to the sea after two months in the Cap d’Antibes wildlife rehabilitation center. She was recovered adrift last April by boaters.

“It’s a little turtle that floated on the surface and let itself drift. It had a behavior that we call ‘apathetic’, it didn’t have much energy anymore”says Sidonie Catteau, sea turtle project manager at the Marineland association, BFM Nice Côte d’Azur.

Trapped without food

She was trapped in the cold currents and could no longer feed herself. She managed to gain 400 grams in two months of treatment, our colleagues report. The Mediterranean has warmed up, the perfect time to release the turtle.

“We are going around five nautical miles, beyond the normal maritime traffic, so that this little turtle can be released in good conditions, in complete safety”explains Gilles Rochette, SNSM volunteer, who escorted the turtle.

Sarah, whose family found torture, was present on board the boat to release her. “It’s a nice moment. It needs good weather, it’s the right opportunity. It’s still a nice adventure”she smiled.
