At the New Popular Front, the thorny choice of a prime minister

Meeting of the New Popular Front, in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), June 17, 2024. LUDOVIC MARIN / AFP

Who would become prime minister if the left came first in the legislative elections? By urgently negotiating the contours of the New Popular Front (NFP), the left-wing parties, which had made Jean-Luc Mélenchon the standard of the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes) in 2022, decided to postpone see you later on this thorny question. Alas, the question comes up repeatedly and each day that passes brings its share of ambitions.

” There is Valerie [Rabault, ex-députée du Tarn-et-Garonne]Carole [Delga, la présidente d’Occitanie]Me, Boris [Vallaud, ancien président du groupe PS] », says the socialist mayor of Rouen, Nicolas-Mayer Rossignol, who takes the opportunity to include himself in the list of contenders. Before him, the outgoing Somme deputy François Ruffin, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and the leader of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel, had said they were ready to don the mantle of prime minister.

But how to choose the Matignon host? Tuesday June 18, the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure, and the coordinator of La France insoumise (LFI), Manuel Bompard, spoke out through the media. “There will be a vote because I don’t know any other way to arbitrate”, said the leader of the rose party for the first time on BFM-TV. And to add: “I cannot impose a socialist prime minister. No one can impose a “rebellious” prime minister “.

Still on BFM-TV, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s first lieutenant responded to him a few hours later. In his opinion, he returns to the group “having the greatest number of deputies” to do “a proposal for a candidate for the post of prime minister”. In other words, to LFI, which had 75 of the approximately 150 left-wing deputies before the dissolution.

“This time, LFI is in the minority”

“Olivier Faure himself proposed this formula which I share”added Mr. Bompard, who is keen to keep this prerogative which was necessary in 2022. “Rather than inventing a new primary and going back on your own word, concentrate on making the New Popular Front win”for his part, launched on X to Olivier Faure the former LFI deputy for Val-d’Oise Paul Vannier. “People vote Front Populaire, not LFI, which does not have an absolute majority in the coalition”contests Luc Broussy, a close friend of Mr. Faure.

Because, if Jean-Luc Mélenchon promised that he would not seek to impose himself, the faithful continue to push his candidacy. Like Antoine Léaument, “rebellious” deputy from Essonne. “The signature of Jean-Luc Mélenchon at the bottom of a programmatic document is a signature that is worth something”he expressed on Franceinfo.
