The peaceful municipality of Saint-Armand, located in the south of Estrie, has become a popular passage for illegal migrants wishing to reach the United States.

Since the closure of Roxham Road, illegal migrants have found new ways to cross illegally into the United States. Last April, 1,492 people were intercepted on American soil, after crossing the United States illegally, according to data from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The mayor of Saint-Armand, Caroline Rosetti, has noticed an increase in illegal migrants in this small municipality. “Citizens contact us regularly to tell us that they have seen people. If they are not caught in the act, we cannot intercept them at the time of crossing. It’s a bit of a waste of effort,” explains the mayor.

However, since the closure of Roxham Road, the mayor had “raised the flag” about their “fears”. “Now, the entire border is exploited like a sieve,” she illustrates. “Among our citizens, this brings fear,” she adds.

The mayor also mentions that these illegal migrants cross in groups. “We are talking about a group of 10 or 12 people crossing the border. They know where to go,” she says.
