Nearly one in ten adults, or 537 million people, suffer from diabetes worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation. And nearly 4 million people are affected in France, 90% of whom have type 2 diabetes, indicates the National Institute of Health and Medical Research. Type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity and low physical activity, and while some medications can help patients manage the disease, research shows that lifestyle changes are key to reducing the risks for health. Intermittent fasting may help people with early-onset type 2 diabetes, according to a new study led by researchers at nine Chinese medical centers. It would be able to improve blood sugar levels, help with weight loss and lower blood pressure.

Participants who adopted the 5:2 diet saw a reduction in their blood sugar levels

For the trial, about 400 participants in China either took antidiabetic medications or followed a 5:2 intermittent fasting schedule. The schedule included two nonconsecutive days of fasting during the week, and five days of “regular” eating, with a full breakfast and lunch, and a meal replacement for dinner.
