A wolf which was preparing to attack a flock of sheep was shot dead on the night of June 8 to 9. “This shot was carried out by a hunter mandated by the operator. This sample follows three recent reports of damage to herds located nearby,” explains the Lozère prefecture. “The shooting took place in addition to the preventive measures put in place by the breeder to protect his herd. »

For several months, breeders in the Massif Central, in Lozère and Aveyron in particular, have deplored attacks on their herds. Defensive shooting is authorized, but it is regulated by legislation. The ministerial decrees set “the conditions and limits under which exemptions from destruction bans can be granted concerning this species”, specifies the State representative in the department.

“The number of wolves in France is decreasing”

These restrictions and the use of shots are denounced by wolf defense associations. Notably the Ferus association, which mentions “a drop in the population of 9%” between 2022 and 2023.
