After almost a month of absence since the Italian GP, the drivers finally returned to the track on the Assen circuit. Aleix Espargaro experienced a minor technical problem in the first minutes of the session. Conversely, rather comfortable on his Ducati, future factory rider Marc Marquez pranced at the head of these free practices for a long time ahead of Jorge Martin and Maverick Viñales. Fabio Quartararo also seemed in good shape on his new mount, remaining in the Top 10 throughout the session.

In the last quarter of an hour, the times fell and Francesco Bagnaia set the best time. He kept improving until the end and only Fabio DiGiannantonio managed to do better before his time was canceled due to a violation of track limits. The Italian finished ahead of his next teammate Marc Marquez and Raul Fernandez. Fabio Quartararo finished in a pleasant fourth position, while Jorge Martin was barely 10th. Johann Zarco, still in difficulty on his Honda, is antepenultimate (21st/23).
